Begin your day early (departure at around 6:00 am) travelling by road through the Braulio Carrillo Rainforest National Park to the Caribbean plains and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery and quaint villages en route. Later, continue through the jungle by boat and cruise the rivers and canals of Tortuguero National Park. After check-in and lunch at your eco-lodge, board the boat once again for a visit to the Tortuguero village where you will get to walk around the town and experience the way of life of the locals and take a walk along the beach. During turtle hatching season, we will look for the baby turtles trying to find their way down to the ocean. Nesting is from July to September, hatching from September to December. Make a stop at the Tortuguero Museum (donation of $2 USD per person). Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing at the hotel, surrounded by the beautiful tropical forest and wildlife.
Today you will have some free time to relax by the pool and also experience the Tortuguero National Park on a three-hour trip, where you can observe over 350 protected species of birds, monkeys, crocodiles and sloths and its lush vegetation (park entrance fee included). During the July to September season you can join an optional late night turtle nesting tour, purchasable directly at the lodge.
Around 9:00 am, board the boat to return to Caño Blanco, where a bus will be waiting to continue your adventure to the fascinating Sarapiquí region. Sarapiquí features primary forest, swamps and banana plantations in a biologically rich area with a temperature ranging between 26-28° C, important for the conservation of birds, butterflies, insects and plants. Arrive and check in to the hotel, and in the afternoon you will be escorted on a guided hike through the forest in search of the diverse wildlife and vegetation.
You have the morning to relax and enjoy the surrounding of the hotel or do an optional activity such as horseback riding, rafting or a visit to the butterfly farm or a bird watching tour at Selva Verde private reserve, one of the world’s most important sites for tropical eco-system research (optional activities are not included). Later, relax and enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside of San Carlos Valley to La Fortuna in Arenal, home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes. On a clear day you will have an amazing view of the volcano from your hotel and, in the active period, the spectacular phenomenon of the lava’s incandescent explosions.
This morning you have the opportunity to hike to La Fortuna waterfalls. From the trailhead, you will hike approximately 15 minutes before reaching this majestic waterfall where you can swim or just enjoy the beauty of the idyllic spot. In the evening, visit the Eco Termales hot springs to relax in the thermal waters surrounded by the most amazing flora.
Early breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to Monteverde. The day begins with a transfer down to the lake where you will board a boat that will take you across towards Monteverde. Once on the other side, a car/bus will take you up to Monteverde. Admire the transition of the rain forest to the cloud forest where you will reach an altitude of 3,600 ft (1,200 m) above sea level. In the afternoon, we will head over to Selvatura Park for an exciting day. For the more adventurous, the canopy tour is a must with one of the longest zip lines you will find in the country. For the less adventurous, you may choose to make your way through the forest on the amazing hanging bridges.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Rincon de La Vieja National Park, boasting a fantastic scenery, beautiful waterfalls, boiling mud pots, a volcanic lake of fresh water and home to an impressive selection of wildlife, insects and birds. In the afternoon, get ready for the three-hour Rio Negro tubing adventure, starting out with a horseback ride and then a short hike down to the river where you will hop into your own individual tube for your downstream river adventure. Return to the hotel by bus. For the less adventurous, substitute the tubing tour for something a little less daring such as a visit to the national park, mud baths and thermal waters or horseback riding to one of the beautiful waterfalls. Please advise your preferences at time of booking.
Morning at leisure, then depart to the capital city, San José. Upon your arrival, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the bustling city. You will visit the Central Market, Democracy Plaza, and the National Park among other attractions.
