A grand tour of Thailand that includes visits to the Khmer temple ruins of southern Isaan, the former capital and World Heritage Site of Sukhothai, the hills and jungles of the notorious Golden Triangle where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet by the mighty Mekong River, and the famous Golden Temple of Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, former capital of the gentle and gracious ancient Lanna kingdom. Early morning pick-up from your hotel in Bangkok (pick-up from outer Bangkok hotels or airport are subject to supplement charges), and drive to Nakhon Ratchasima, the gateway to Isaan. Lunch at a local restaurant en route. Visit the impressive ancient Khmer temple complex of Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, situated on an extinct volcano, and the renovated Prasat Mueang Tam. En route to Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), we visit the ceramic pottery village of Dan Kwian.
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the Baan Prasat archaeological site and visit the Khmer temple complex of Prasat Hin Phimai, which shares a close resemblance with the Angkor temples in Cambodia. Lunch at a local restaurant and visit the Sai Ngam Banyan Tree before the final stretch towards Phitsanulok.
Begin your day with a visit to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and continue to the ancient cities and historical landmarks of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, both protected by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Lunch en route at local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Phra That Lampang Luang.
Depart to Chiang Rai. Along the route visit the beautiful temple of Wat Chedi Sao. A drive through pineapple fields takes you to the lake of Kwan Pha Yao and the unique, impressive white temple of Wat Rong Khun. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon visits to the small border trading town of Mae Sai, the Akha and Yao hill tribes, the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, and the old city of Chiang Sean. Drive back to Chiang Rai.
It is an early start this morning. Take a three-hour boat ride on the Kok River to Phathai and stop at local hill tribe villages along the way. Continue to Thaton and on to Chiang Mai, Rose of the North. Lunch at local restaurant. Afternoon visit to the handicraft villages of Bo Sang and San Kamphaeng to admire exquisitely-produced hand-woven silk and traditional products. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Today you have the opportunity to get close and personal with the endearing and skilful Thai Elephants at a nearby elephant camp. You can even try riding (the elephant ride is optional and not included). Lunch at local restaurant. Your tour continues with a visit to the famous mountain-top temple extending breathtaking views over the beautiful surrounding landscape. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore more of Chiang Mai on your own. In the evening, enjoy a farewell Northern-style Khantoke dinner with traditional classical dance shows.
Free time at leisure until pick-up from your hotel for transfer to Chiang Mai airport. Onward flight to Bangkok or your next destination.
